"PURLEIGH, a parish in the hundred of DENGIE, county of ESSEX, 4 miles (S. by W.) from Maldon., containing 967 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, annexed to the Provostship of Oriel College, Oxford, and holden without institution, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £25. The church, dedicated to All Saints, is large and handsome, with an embattled tower of flint and stone. The parish school is supported by subscription."
