"STAPLEFORD (ABBOT'S), a parish in the hundred of ONGAR, county of ESSEX, 5¾ miles (S. E. by S.) from Epping, containing 458 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £16. 15., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a school-house, endowed with three old cottages and £25 a year, in which forty boys are instructed."
