“BUMPSTEAD (STEEPLE), a parish in the hundred of HINCKFORD, county of ESSEX, 8 ¾ miles (N. W. by N.) from Castle-Hedingham, containing 961 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Middlesex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £15. 2. 1., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Mary.
