"TOLLESHUNT (MAJOR), a parish in the hundred of THURSTABLE, county of ESSEX, 5½ miles (N. E. by E.) from Maldon, containing 422 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £8. Mrs. Jegon was patroness in 1810. The church is dedicated- to St. Nicholas. The parish extends south to Blackwater river. Here is a venerable remnant of the old manor-house, consisting of a spacious brick gateway, with four embattled turrets."
