"WOODFORD WELLS is a hamlet of Woodford, deriving its name from a mineral spring, once famous, but now neglected. The hamlet is delightfully situated in Epping forest, overlooking the river Roding and the opposite hills, and having many elegant mansions. It is 9½ miles from London, and 1½ north of Woodford." [From the Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Kent ... , 1855]
