MARSHFIELD.

Is a parish, and the only one, in the upper division of Thornbury hundred -- the market town, a small one, is 103 miles w. by s. from London, ont the road to Bristol, from which it is distant twelve miles ; by this road, the distance between these two cities is shorter by five miles than through Bath, which lies about seven miles to the south. It is situated at one of the south - east angles of Gloucestershire, where Wilts and Somerset meet the first named county ; and about 4½ miles n.w from Box station, on the Great Western railway. The town consists of one street, and about half a mile in length. Malting is the chief trade of the place, and the produce of the land in its vacinity is almost confined to barley.

The parish of Saint Mary is an ancient and handsome structure, in the later style of English architecturer, with a fine square tower at the western end ; the living is a discharged vicarage, in the gift of the Wardon and Fellows of New College Oxford ; the Rev George Sherer is the present incumbent. There are a chapel each for the Independents, Unitarians and Primitive Methodists ; two or three public schools (one of which is endowed), and almshouses for eight aged and indigent men and women. The market is now but little attended. Fairs, May 24th, for horned cattle, and October 24th, for horses, sheep and cheese. The parish contained in 1831, 1,631 inhabitants, and in 1814, 1,674.
