"PRESTON, a parish in the lower division of Dudstone hundred, county Gloucester, 3 miles S.W. of Ledbury, its post town, and 15 N.W. of Gloucester. The village, which is of small extent, is situated on the borders of Herefordshire. The parish is intersected by the turnpike road leading from Gloucester and Newent to Leominster, and by that from Ledbury to Ross. Preston anciently belonged to a religious house, hence its present name. The neighbourhood is celebrated for its perry and cider. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, value £128, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, dedicated to St. Matthew, has a low turret containing two bells. Preston Court, the principal residence, stands near the church. The Pauncefoote family are lords of the manor."
