"HAVERTHWAITE, a hamlet and ecclesiastical district in the parish of Colton, hundred of Lonsdale North of the Sands, county Lancaster, 5 miles E. of Ulverston. It is situated on the W. bank of the river Leven, near the Ulverston and Lancaster road. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle, value £127, in the patronage of the Vicar of Colton and Bishop of Carlisle alternately. The church, dedicated to St. Ann, is a small stone building with a tower. There are daily and Sunday schools. The Duke of Buccleuch is lord of the manor."
