"SMALLBRIDGE, a village in the township of Wuerdle, parish of Rochdale, county Lancaster, 2 miles N.E. of Rochdale, its post town. The village, which is considerable, is situated near the Leeds canal. The inhabitants are principally employed in the neighbouring cotton-mills. The living is a curacy in the diocese of Manchester, value £147, in the patronage of the Vicar of Rochdale. The church is modern. There are National and other schools."
