"EXTON, a parish in the upper half of the hundred of Meon Stoke, county Hants, 5 miles N.E. of Bishop's Waltham, and 10 N.W. of Fareham. The land is chiefly arable, with a considerable proportion of woodland. The village is small, and wholly agricultural. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Winchester, value £331, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is dedicated to SS. Peter and Paul. The Dean and Chapter of Winchester are lords of the manor. Grove House and Exton Lodge are the principal residences. On a hill, which divides this parish from that of Meon-Stoke, is a Roman encampment, and near it several barrows. "
