"DOWNTON, a parish in the hundred of Wigmore, in the county of Hereford, 2 miles S.E. of Leintwardine, its post town, and 7 W. of Ludlow. It is situated on the river Terne, and is well wooded. The soil is shallow, on a substratum of rock. There are only a few scattered houses. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Hereford, value £154, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church, dedicated to St. Giles, is a small ancient structure in the early English style of architecture, with belfry. It contains monuments, and a brass and font of early date. Sir William E. R. Boughton, Bart., is lord of the manor and owner of the whole of the soil. Downton Hall is the principal residence."
