"EARDISLAND, a parish in the hundred of Stratford, county Hereford, 5 miles W. of Leominster station on the Shrewsbury and Hereford line, and 9 to the E. of Kington. Pembridge is its post town. It is situated on the river Arrow, near Watling Street, which is believed to have passed through the parish. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Hereford, value £198, in the patronage of the Bishop of Worcester. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient stone structure, with a tower. The charities, including the endowment of the free school, amount to £51 per annum. James Kinnersley Smythies, Esq., is lord of the manor of Eardisland; and the Rev. William Edward Evans is lord of the manor of Burton, situated in this parish."
