MUCH COWARNE.

COWARNE MAGNA, or MUCH COWARNE, is an extensive parish, 6 miles south-from Bromyard (its postal town), 9 north from Hereford, 10 north-east from Ledbury, 10 west from Malvern, and 16 west-by-north-west from Worcester, in Broxash hundred, Bromyard union and county court district, North Frome deanery, Hereford archdeaconry and bishopric; it is skirted on the north by the turnpike road leading from road leading from Bromyard to Hereford. The church of St. Mary, prettily situated on a hill, is an ancient stone structure in the Saxon style of architecture; it was injured by lightening in the year 1840, the spire having been completely destroyed, and one since erected in its place. In the tower are placed 3 bells; the interior consists of a nave, aisle, porch, chancel, and three ancient monuments, one of a warrior of the time of the Crusades. The register dates from 1559. The living is a vicarage, worth £300 yearly, with residence and 7 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester; the Rev. James John George Graham, M.A., of Queen's College, Oxford, is the incumbent. There is a National school for boys and girls. The parish contains some very extensive farms. The population in 1861 was 563; the acreage is 3,535. The soil is clayey; and the subsoil is red marl. The Hon. Percy S. Wyndham, M.P, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The land is productive, and yields wheat, beans, hops, and apples.

Parish Clerk, Joseph Davies.
