THORNBURY is a parish 4 miles north from Bromyard (its postal town), 7 south from Tenbury, and 8 east from Leominster railway station, in Broxash hundred, Bromyard union and county court district, Frome deanery, and Hereford archdeaconry and bishopric, situated about 2 miles from the turnpike road leading from Bromyard to Tenbury. The church of St. Ann is an old stone building in the Norman style, with square tower and small spire, and contains 3 bells; it has a nave, chancel, porch, and font. The register dates from 1620. The living, is a rectory, commuted at £188 yearly, with residence and 26 acres of glebe land, in the gift of William Lacon Childe, Esq. the Rev. John Williams is the incumbent. Within a half mile of the church is an old Roman encampment, in excellent preservation, containing about 20 acres. The population in 1861 was 224; the acreage is 2,138. The soil is clayey and loamy; subsoil red marl. W. L. Childe, Esq., and E. B. Pateshall, Esq., are the chief landowners. The chief crops are wheat, beans, apples and hops. There are charities of £4 yearly value.Parish Clerk, Richard Whittall.
