WELLINGTON.

WELLINGTON, is a village and parish, delightfully situate in a, 5½ miles north from Hereford, 2½ north-by-west from Moreton Station on the Shrewsbury and Hereford railway, 8 south from Leominster and 151 from London, in Grimsworth Hundred, Hereford Union and county court district, Weston rural deanery, Hereford archdeaconry and diocese; situated on the Leominster and Hereford turnpike road, and bounded on the east by the River Lugg. The church of St. Margaret is an ancient stone building in the Norman and Early English styles, with chancel, nave, aisles and square tower containing 5 bells; and a south porch: In the chancel there is a brass monument to Sir Herbert Perrott. The Register dates from the year 1636. The living is a vicarage, commuted at £250 yearly, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester, and held by the Rev. Thomas Shepherd, B.A. of Christ Church. There are six almshouses for aged men, with an endowment by Sir Herbert Perrott with £20 yearly and a pair of shoes and a coat for each inmate. In addition there are charities of £15 yearly value. Rev. W. T. Kevill-Davies, is lord of the manor. John Harris, esq., and the Rev. Thomas King, are chief landowners. The soil is red loamy; subsoil, gravel. The land is very fertile, and produces apples, hops, wheat, barley, oats, beans, peas and swedes. The area is 2,547 acres, rateable value, £6410; and the population in 1871 was 651.

   POST OFFICE. - James Whitman, sub postmaster. Letters arrive from Hereford, 9.20 a.m.; despatched thereto at 3.40 p.m. The nearest money order office is at Hereford

   There are two small endowed schools for boys and girls, & a Sunday School is held in the church.

   A School Board was formed in December, 1878, of 5 members; Clerk, Thomas Llanwarne.
