WHITBOURNE is an extensive parish, 10 miles north-west from Worcester (its post and railway town), 5 north-east from Bromyard, 19 east from Hereford, and 17 south-east from Leominster, in Broxash hundred, Bromyard union and county court district, Frome deanery, and Hereford archdeaconry and bishopric; it is situated on the turnpike road between Worcester and Leominster, and the river Teme bounds the parish. The church of St. John the Baptist is an old stone building, principally in the Norman style, with a Perpendicular tower containing 6 bells; the interior consists of nave, chancel, porch, and a lich gate. The register dates from 1597. The living is a rectory, value £535 yearly, with residence and 30 acres of glebe land; in the gift of the Bishop of the diocese; the Rev. Robert Biscoe, M.A., of Christ Church, Oxford, is the incumbent. Here is a Free school for boys and girls, with an average attendance of from 90 to 100. The population in 1861 was 891; the area is 3,056 acres. The soil is clayey upon gravel and sandstone. The Bishop of Hereford is lord of the manor, and John Freeman, Esq., is the chief landowner. The chief crops are wheat, beans, and hops. The principal seats are, Gaines, the residence of John Freeman, Esq., J.P., 1 mile from the church; and Whitbourne Court, the residence of C. J. La Trobe, Esq., formerly the residence of the Bishops of Hereford, adjoining the church..Parish Clerk, Joseph Andrews.
