"WHITCHURCH, a parish in the hundred of Lower Wormelow, county Hereford, 6 miles S.W. of Ross, and 4 N.E. of Hereford. It is situated on the right bank of the river Wye, and on the road from Ross to Hereford. The scenery embraces Doward Hill, Symond's Yat, and other spots on the Wye. There is a private asylum for lunatics, called Whitchurch Asylum. Limestone is quarried on the hill of Great Doward, and the substratum contains ironstone, which was formerly worked. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Hereford, value £280. The church is dedicated to St. Dubritius. In the churchyard is the tomb of the Gwillams family. There are a chapel for Independents and a National school. The charities produce about £26 per annum."
