"LEIGHTON, (Huntingdonshire) 5 m. N. of Kimbolton, gives name to its H. and, was the ancient seat of the Darcys, of whom Hen. Darcy was sheriff of the Co. in the R. of Q. Eliz. by whose daughter it passed in marriage to Sir Jervaise Clifton of Somerset, who was created baron of Leighton by K. Ja. I. and began to build a beautiful house here, but did not live to finish it. His daughter marrying the D. of Lenox, and having the D. of Richmond by him, this Lp. passed, in marriage with his heiress, to Richard the late E. of Arran, and from him to his heiress, the Lady Butler."
