"BIRCHINGTON, a parish in the hundred of Ringslow, lathe of St. Augustine, in the county of Kent, 3 miles to the W. of Margate, its post town. It lies near the seacoast, and is a member of Dover Cinque port. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the vicarage of Monekton, in the diocese of Canterbury. The church is dedicated to All Saints. It is an ancient structure, with a tower and spire, and has a chapel attached to it belonging to the manor of Quex, and containing five-brasses, the earliest being of the year 1449, and several monuments to the Crisper, of Quex. The old manor-house is now converted into a farm-house. There is a free school, founded and endowed by Anna G. Crispe, in 1707, with an income of about £40."
