"BISHOPSBOURNE, a parish in the hundred of Kinghamford, lathe of St. Augustine, in the county of Kent, 3 miles to the S.E. of Canterbury, its post town. It is watered by the Little Stour. The manor of Bourne was formerly held by the archbishops of Canterbury, one of whom entertained Henry I. here when prevented by a storm from embarking for the Continent. Part of the land is laid out in hop-grounds. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Canterbury, of the value of £700, in the gift of the archbishop. The church is dedicated to St. Mary, and contains the grave and a bust of Richard Hooker, who held the rectory the last five years of his life, and died here in November, 1600. Bourne House is the principal mansion."
