"NETTLESTEAD, a parish in the hundred of Twyford, lathe of Aylesford, county Kent, 7 miles S.W. of Maidstone, its post town, and half a mile from the Wateringbury I station on a branch line of the Maidstone railway The village, which is small and wholly agricultural, is situated on the navigable river Medway, near Brand Bridge. The land is partly in common, with some hop-grounds. The living is a rectory annexed to that of West Barming, in the diocese of Canterbury, value £442. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, has a small tower containing three bells. The interior of the church has tombs of the Pimpes, Scotts, and Botelers, of whose old seat there are still traces. The register dates from 1450. There is a National school for both sexes. The Earl of Gainsborough is lord of the manor."

"WEST BARMING, a hamlet in the parish of Nettlestead, hundred of Twyford and lathe of Aylesford, in the county of Kent, adjoining East Barming. It is on the north bank of the river Medway; and was once a separate parish. The living is consolidated with the rectory of Nettlestead.
