"STOWTING, a parish in the hundred of Stouting, lathe of Shepway, county Kent, 6 miles N.W. of Hythe, its post town, and 3½ from Westenhanger railway station. The village is situated on Stane Street and the river Stour. The land is partly in common and hop-grounds. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Canterbury, value £252. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The register dates from 1538. The parochial charities produce about £18 per annum. The Wesleyans have a chapel. Some urns and Roman coins have been discovered."
