COLTON, or Coulton, a village, a parish, and a sub-district in Ulverstone district, Lancashire. The village stands between the rivers Crake and Leven, under Furness fells, 3½ miles WSW of the foot of the lake Windermere, 4½ N of the Ulverstone and Lancaster railway, and 5½ NNE of Ulverstone. The parish includes also Haverthwaite and Rusland hamlets and Finsthwaite chapelry; and the first of these has a post office under Newton-in-Cartmel. Acres, 13,330. Real property, £8,814. Pop., 1,794. Houses, 340. The property is subdivided. The surface shares in the fine scenery of the Furness fells and the Lake country. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle. Value, £110. Patrons, the Landowners. The church is tolerable. Tho p. curacies of Haverthwaite, Rusland, and Finsthwaite are separate benefices. There is a Baptist chapel. A school has £67 from endowment; and other charities £14. The sub-district contains also four townships of Ulverstone parish. Acres, 22,486. Pop., 3,838. Houses, 730.

"RUSLAND, a chapelry in the parish of Colton, hundred of Lonsdale, county Lancaster, 7 miles N.E. of Ulverston. It is situated in the neighbourhood of Windermere, on the river Leven. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle, value £64, in the patronage of the Incumbent of Colton. The church, dedicated to St. Paul, was built in 1745."

"COLTON, (or Coulton), a parish in the hundred of Lonsdale North of the Sands, in the county of Lancaster, 6 miles N.W. of Ulverston, and 21 S.W. of Kendal. It is situated near the rivers Leven and Crake, and contains the chapelries of Rusland, Finsthwaite, and Haverthwaite. In the vicinity are the beautiful lakes of Windermere and Coniston, which may be seen to great advantage from many points in this parish. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in the cotton and wood trades, and in agriculture. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle, value £110, in the patronage of certain landowners. The parish church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a plain stone structure. There are the following district churches in this parish: Finsthwaite, a perpetual curacy, value £76, in the patronage of the landowners; Haverthwaite, a perpetual curacy, value £127, in the patronage of the Incumbent of Colton and the bishop alternately; and Rusland, a perpetual curacy, value £64, in the patronage of the Incumbent of Colton. The charities amount to £81 per annum. The Baptists have a chapel at Tottlebank. There are two endowed schools called Sandys' and Dixon's schools, besides parochial and Sunday schools. The Duke of Buccleuch is lord of the manor.

"HAVERTHWAITE, a hamlet and ecclesiastical district in the parish of Colton, hundred of Lonsdale North of the Sands, county Lancaster, 5 miles E. of Ulverston. It is situated on the W. bank of the river Leven, near the Ulverston and Lancaster road. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle, value £127, in the patronage of the Vicar of Colton and Bishop of Carlisle alternately. The church, dedicated to St. Ann, is a small stone building with a tower. There are daily and Sunday schools. The Duke of Buccleuch is lord of the manor."

"FINSTHWAITE, a parochial chapelry in the parish of Colton and hundred of Lonsdale North of the Sands, county palatine Lancaster, 6 miles S. of Hawkshead, and 8 N.E. of Ulverston. Cartmel is its post town. It is situated on the western side of Windermere Lake, and includes the hamlet of Newby Bridge. Basket making and bobbin turning is carried on here. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle, value £76, in the gift of the landowners. The church is a small stone edifice dedicated to St. Peter. There is a school which possesses a small endowment. The Duke of Buccleuch is lord of the manor."
