Church History

It was founded on 4th August 1874. The current church was built in 1984.

An old building, once used by fustian cutters, was rented from St. Mary's, Oldham, and the first Mass said by Fr. Grymonprez in 1874. Fr. Baetings was the first Rector, appointed August 1874. He was one of the Dutch priests who helped the diocese. In 1887 Fr. T. Cusack was appointed, and in 1894 Fr. John Burke, who built a new school-chapel, opened in 1896. He was here for 14 years and then left for St. Patrick's, Bolton.

Fr. Francis Clarke made several improvements, and in recent years the work has been continued by Fr. J. Cronin and Fr. F. Diamond. A very handsome gift to the parish was lost because a cheque was not presented before a firm went into liquidation.

Taken from "Salford Diocese and its Catholic past", a survey by Charles A. Bolton, a Priest of the above Diocese. Published 1950 on the First Centenary for the Diocese of Salford.
