It is a parish in the deanry of Warrington. The living is a vicarage; patron, the Earl of Derby. The parish contains the townships of Ormskirk, Burcough, Latham, Scarisbrook, and Bickerstaff-with-Shelmerdine. The church is an old Gothic structure, remarkable for having two steeples, one a tower, and the other a spire: popular tradition says it was built by two Ladies of the name of Orme, who disagreeing as to the kind of steeple, each built one to her own taste. It has two chapels of ease under it, viz. Latham and Shelmerdine. In the town is also a dissenting chapel, belonging to a congregation of Presbyterians. The market is one Thursday, and the fairs are held on Whit-monday and Tuesday, and September 8th, for cattle, horses, &c. In 1801, Ormskirk contained 614 houses, and 2554 inhabitants |
