The living is a perpetual curacy; patron, T. Leigh, Esq. Newton is a borough by prescription, governed by a Steward, Bailiff and Burgesses, and sends two members to parliament; the right of election is in 36 burgesses, who occupy certain tenements. Newton had formerly a market on Saturdays, but is now discontinued. It has, however, annual races, and two fairs, viz. May 17th, and August 11th and 12th, for cattle, horses, &c.

W. lon. 2º.3".) 71/2 miles N.E. of Manchester, is a parish; or rather a parochial Chapelry (being joined to Prestwich, which see) in the deanry of Manchester, containing 4 townships, viz. Oldham, Royton, Chadderton and Crompton, which, together, are supposed to contain nearly 20,000 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the joint gift of the rectors of Prestwich, Middleton and Bury. The church is an ancient structure with a good peal of bells. Oldham has not a regular market, but has a fair on May 2 for cattle, horses, sheep, toys, &c.

ORMSKIRK, (N. lat. 53º 52". W. lon. 2º 48".) 13 miles N.N.E. of Liverpool, 181/2 miles S.S.W. of Preston, and 2101/4 miles from London. This is a neat market town, with four well-built streets. It is a parish in the deanry of Warrington. The living is a vicarage; patron, the Earl of Derby. The parish contains the townships of Ormskirk, Burcough, Latham, Scarisbrook, and Bickerstaff-with-Shelmerdine. The church is an old Gothic structure, remarkable for having two steeples, one a tower, and the other a spire: popular tradition says it was built by two Ladies of the name of Orme, who disagreeing as to the kind of steeple, each built one to her own taste. It has two chapels of ease under it, viz. Latham and Shelmerdine. In the town is also a dissenting chapel, belonging to a congregation of Presbyterians. The market is one Thursday, and the fairs are held on Whit-monday and Tuesday, and September 8th, for cattle, horses, &c. In 1801, Ormskirk contained 614 houses, and 2554 inhabitants
