Church History

It was founded in 1840.
St. Thomas' Church, Penny street, is a handsome stone building, in the Early English style of architecture, and at the east end is a lofty spire, with six bells. It was built by subscription in 1840, on land given by G. Marton, Esq., and endowed with £1,000 by Mrs. Elizabeth Salisbury, who also gave £100 pounds towards the purchase of a parsonage house. It also received £200 from Queen Anne's Bounty, and £150 was given by Colin Campbell. The interior consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, and there is an excellent organ, presented by the Rev. C. Campbell, formerly patron of the living, the present patrons are the Church Pastoral Aid Society.
