Bland in his "Annals of Southport" says that the "Sugar Hillock" Chapel was opened in the autumn of 1816 by Rev. Thos. Hill of the Preston Circuit. It was the first Weslyan place of worship in the parish. Previously the Weslyans had been using 2 cottages behind Botanic Road from 1904 which they initially shared with the "Independents" (Congregationalists) before they built their own church in 1806/07.
He says the Weslyan Reformers obtained possession of it in 1852 and continued to use it until the erection of the United Methodist Free Church, High Park.
The Wesleyan Methodist church was formed in the 18th century from religous societies founded by John Wesley and his preachers. It suffered many secessions, but was the largest Nonconformist denomination in the 19th century. In 1932 the Wesleyan Methodists joined with the Primitive Methodists and the United Methodists to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain.
This site provides historical information about churches, other places of worship and cemeteries. It has no connection with the churches etc. themselves.
