It was founded before 1541. An unusual feature of Rivington Church is that it is not dedicated to any saint or martyr, but is correctly referred to as 'Rivington Church'. Rivington was a chapelry of the parish of Bolton, being made a parish in its own right only on the appointment of the Rev. Thomas Sutcliffe in October 1856.
