It was founded before 1851.
Near the centre of the town is the Society of Friends Meeting House which is a listed building and described as being the oldest meeting house still in use in the historic county of Lancashire. Although it is listed as a seventeenth century structure, modern research suggests that it may be of greater antiquity.
