Description in 1871:
"GILMORTON, a parish in Lutterworth district, Leicester; 3 miles NE by N of Lutterworth, and 4 SE of Broughton-Astley r. station. It has a post office under Lutterworth. Acres, 2,830. Real property, £4,455. Pop., 853. Houses, 200. The property is subdivided. Some of the inhabitants are stocking-makers. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough. Value, £632. Patron, the Rev. J. M. Lakin. The church was rebuilt in 1860, at a cost of upwards of £2, 000 There are a Baptist chapel, an endowed school, and some small charities."

Church History

  • The Anglican parish church is dedicated to All Saints.
     
  • The church dates from before the 17th century.
     
  • The church was rebuilt in 1860.
     
  • A clock was added to the tower in 1882.
     
  • The church spire was damaged by storms in 1883-84 and was partially rebuilt in 1885. It was entirely rebuilt in 1909.
     
  • The church seats 430 (one source tells us 450).
     
  • In 1898 a new Lych Gate was built at the north entrance to the churchyard.

Gilmorton is a village and civil parish in the southern hills of Leicestershire, England. The parish lies 97 miles north of London, 12 miles south of Leicester city and 5 miles east of Ullesthorpe parish. The parish covers just over 2,470 acres and includes the hamlet of Cotes de Val.
