Stoke Golding

• The Cemetery of 1.5 acres was formed in 1883 and was under the control of the Parish Council.

• The Anglican parish church was dedicated to Saint Margaret of Antioch.
   
• The church was built in the early 13th century.
   
• The Anglican ecclesiastical parish was formed out of Hinckley's in 1865.

• St Martin's Dominican Convent was established in Stoke Golding in 1948. The convent was the object of arson a few years ago which destroyed much of the building. The convent closed in December 2011.

• The Anglican parish register includes Dadlington and dates from 1656 for baptisms, 1661 for marriages and 1657 for burials.

• The church was in the rural Sparkenhoe deanery (second portion).
   
• The Particular Baptist chapel was built in 1853 and enlarged in 1874.
   
• The Primitive Methodist chapel was built in 1857 and was replaced by a larger chapel in 1905.
   
• In 1932 the Primitive Methodists joined with the Wesleyans and the United Methodists to share one Methodist Church. This new chapel opened in 1933.
   

• Civil Registration began in July, 1837.
   
• The parish was in the Hinckley sub-district of the Hinckley Registration District.
   

Stoke Golding is a village and was a parish and a chapelry 3 miles northwest of Hinckley, 4 miles north of Nuneaton, 100 miles north of London and 5 miles south of Market Bosworth. The parish covered 1,291 acres.

The village lies in a curve of the Ashby Canal to the west. If you are planning a visit:

• By automobile, take the A5 west out of Hinckley and turn right onto the A444. About one mile later, turn right at Fenny Drayton onto the old Roman Road out to Stoke Golding.
   
• An alternative route would be to take the A447 south out of Ibstock. Turn right at Stapleton and head west past Dadlington to Stoke Golding.

  The last of the battles of the Wars of the Roses was fought near here. The Battle of Bosworth Field was fought at Redmoor on 22 August, 1485. Some remains of entrenchments are still visible in the field.
   
• Most of the workers in the village were frame-work knitters.
   
• Boots and shoe-heels were also made here.
   
• The village had a bone-meal factory in the 1800s.
   
• Electricity came to the village in the 1920s.
   
• The current Village Hall was opened in 1961.

Michael GARLICK has a photograph of the Church Spire on Geo-graph, taken in April, 2016. The spire was taken down in World War II at the request of the US Air Force who had a base nearby. It was not put back together properly.

Mat FASCIONE's photograph of the Cemetery (above) shows the War Memorial in the center of that image. The memorial was placed in the cemetery in September 1921.

In 1925 Captain Charles Daniel FINCH-KNIGHTLEY is noted as a Justice of the Peace who is living in the parish. He would later become the 10th Earl of Aylesford. He had married Aileen J. C. BOYLE In Bengal, India, on 7 Feb 1918 while on military service in Calcutta.

• This place was an ancient chapelry in Hinckley parish of the county. It became an ecclesiastical parish in 1865.
   
• In December, 1866, this chapelry was formed as a Civil Parish and remained so until 1935.
   
• The parish lies in the Sparkenhoe Hundred in the southern (or western) division of the county.
   
• In April, 1935, this Civil Parish was abolished and 389 acres given to Higham on the Hill Civil Parish and the remaining 902 acres given back to Hinckley Civil Parish.
   
• The citizens are currently represented by the Parish Council, who you may contact regarding civic and political issues. They are NOT staffed to answer your family history questions.
   
• The Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council provide district governance.
   

• As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, this parish became part of the Hinckley Poorlaw Union in 1851.
   
• Bastardy cases would be heard in the Market Bosworth petty sessional hearings.

• A Free School for boys was founded here in 1678 by Mrs. Hester HODGES. The school house was almost entirely rebuilt in 1841.
   
• A Public Elementary School was built in 1868 to replace the above and this school was shared with Dadlington parish.
   
• A Public Elementary School for infants was built in 1898 for 88 children.
   
• St. Martin's Roman Catholic School started here in 1948.
