BRIGG,

Or Glamford Briggs or Glandford Bridge, a market town and chapelry, in the hundred of Yarborough and division of Lindsay, is 156 miles from London, 24 N. of Lincoln, and 16 s. w. of Hull. It is situated on the banks of the river Archolme (sic) (Ancholme), in the centre of the level of that name, the draining of which was accomplished some years since, at a considerable expence, and which is supported by a tax on the land, and tonnage on the navigation of the river, which is navigable from Bishop's Bridge, to Ferraby-sluice, where it opens into the Humber. Above and below the town the river divides into two branches, one of which runs through the town, the other a quarter of a mile westward of it, and has a small, but commodious bridge over each branch. It forms a part of the four adjoining parishes of Wrawby, Bigby, Broughton and Searby, but has no place of worship for the established church, except a small but neat chapel, erected at the expence of four gentlemen in 1699. The primitive and Wesleyan methodists, independents and quakers have each a meeting house in the town, and the Roman catholics have a chapel. The free grammar school here was founded and endowed by Sir John Nelson, Bart. for the instruction of boys born in the town of Brigg, in the classics, and for others, not natives, in reading, writing, and arithmetic, the number of scholars being limited to eighty. Robert Carey Elwes, Esq. is lord of the manor, and holds a court occasionally; there is also a court of requests: and the magistrates hold petty sessions once a fortnight. This town was originally a fishing hamlet, but has been for some centuries past a small market town. It is a neatly built and paved, and has a good trade, which consists chiefly in corn, coal and timber; the principal manufacture in the town is that of skins, particularly rabbit, in which last there are more hands employed than in any other provincial town in the kingdom. The soil about the town is sandy, and the land of the several parishes with which it is connected is generally highly cultivated. The market is on Thursday; and the annual fair on the 5th of August, for horses and cattle, but it is generally more of a pleasure fair. The chapelry contained, according to the census of 1821, 1,674 inhabitants.
