The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

"RAMSHOPE, an extra parochial place in the S. division of Coquetdale ward, county Northumberland, 15 miles N.W. of Bellingham. It is situated in a wild spot on the river Reed under Carter Fell, one of the Cheviots, which here separates England from Scotland, and attains an elevation of 1,602 feet above sea level. A conflict took place at a short distance from this spot in 1575 between the English and Scotch wardens, which is celebrated in the old ballad called "The Battle of Reedswire, or Reidssquair.""
