Fuel Distribution
Ashill like a number of Parishes had Charities which had left money to help its poor. These are described in 1811 by Zachary Clark in his book on Norfolk Charities .
For more information on these and other records see the Parish Accounts page.
This is one item from a Norfolk Record Office document [with reference PD 548/94 and microform MF718/11] containing Miscellaneous Papers for 1818-1837 (but it also contains earlier documents).
This document is undated and lists the "Certificate Inhabitants" and the "Inhabitants" of the Parish together with the number of their children and an additional column headed "Turf". I believe it to date from the 1790s for reasons described below :-
1. Jeremiah Brownsill was buried on 18/July/1800 aged 79 years and the cause of death was smallpox. Mary Baker (aged 70) died of the same cause which claimed 5 people altogether that year. Margaret Ofield (aged 87) was buried 25/Mar/1800.
2. Thomas Norgate (widower) married Alice Barker on 5/Jan/1785 and they had four people in their family in 1787. Here they have six.
3. Other families have increased in number since 1787 ie. John Blower(+4), John Boughen(+2), James Bartlett(+3), Stephen Griggs(+2), Harrell(+3), Miller(+4), John Ofield(+8) etc. some of which are due to births.
This Fuel allocation looks very similar to the document for 1787 which is linked below.

Notes
- In other documents the following alternative spellings have been seen which appear to refer to the same people/places:-
Lockit/Lockwood, Ofield/Oldfield, Roome/Rome - In the Children columns it is likely that the first is males which appears to be confirmed by the Stebbings entries.
- Two Inhabitants were allocated 245 pieces of Turf (for the fire). Certificate Inhabitants seem to get generally half this quantity with one or two minor exceptions.
