Census: 1770

Blakeney is one of the few places in the county for which a census before 1841 containing names survives.

This 1770 Norfolk Record Office document [with the reference PD 619/31 and MF 1004/2] is on 3 sheets of paper. Each sheet on film had a number of columns. For transcription purposes each of these columns has been treated as a table indicated by [Table 'no'] before it.

Tables 1 through 6 list all the people and then Tables 7 and 8 list those with children (or in a few cases the children's names ) under 16 years.

General Notes

  • The enumerator did not cross all of his letter "t"'s. These have been corrected where obvious ie. CROFTS, but left in other places.
    • Be wary of KILWOOD/KELWOOD as KITWOOD appears in 1851 census.
    • HEWELL could be HEWETT?
  • In each household the first name would appear to be the head. Other people bearing different names may be relations or servants.
  • The end of each household is indicated by a number in the column labelled "H" in the first table.
An example would be the second Houshold in Table 1 which contains "John LOWNE" (the head) and "Elizabeth Lowne" and an "Eliz. Cubitt" ie. 3 persons.
  • The contraction Do means Ditto ie. the same as the above and usually indicates the same surname.
  • Christian names have also been shortened eg. Jas = James etc.

The Census Document

The original document had the following headings spelt out in full. They have been contracted to allow for a clearer display.

Young's second visitation 20 june 1770

[End of Census Document]

Numbered Notes

  • 1. The entry for "Peter Silence" was missing a "1" from the "No" column and had no number in the "H" column implying he was sharing a house with the next family.
  • 2. If the end of a household/family has nothing in the Column labelled "H" then they were sharing a building with the next household in the list. ie. Two or more families were living in the same building. eg. George BEAVIS/Tobais LOWNE (Table 1), BROWNE/BROWNE etc.
  • 3. The POULAGE family have only 3 listed members but 4 given as the number of inhabitants.
  • 4. These "S" letters are assumed to means "Servants".
