BUCKENHAM, NEW, S. Martin - 6 [bells]. Tenor, diameter 38in.

 

1. "Dobson 1814."
2. My song shall be alway of the loving kindness of the Lord.
3. Prosperity to the Town of New Buckenham 1814.
4. Fear God, Honour the King.
5. Benjamin Sword and John Gall Churchwardens 1814.
6. In commemoration of Peace these six bells were cast in the year 1814.

Under the date of 16 July, 1814, we read in the Norwich Mercury, "A new peal of six musical bells, the weight of the tenor about twelve cwt., are now casting at the foundery at Downham, for the noble tower of the parish church of New Buckenham, Norfolk."

On the 24 September, 1814, the following notice appeared:-

"To Lovers of Harmony.
The new peal of bells in the parish church of New Buckenham, will be opened on Wednesday 28 September inst., and a prize of 6 hats, value 10s. each, will be given to the Company of six who shall give proof of their skill in ringing the best peal. In order to impartiality, the precedency in ringing is to be decided by lot."
