Census: 1803

New Buckenham is one of the few places in the county for which a census before 1841 containing names survives.

This 1803 Norfolk Record Office document [with the reference MC 343/123a 735x9] covers 10 pages, the start of each being indicated by [Page xx] in the text.

The following is actually described as a Military List but is much more than that. To find all those males between the ages of 15 and 60 a list was drawn up which in addition to them also included some males above 60 and a number of singlewomen and widows. The ages, marital status and other information was also recorded for most people.

Notes

  • It is assumed that where no age is given for a male then they are under 15 years.
  • There are a number of men aged 70 years but none above so the enumerator may just have rounded their ages down to this figure?
  • Entry for Grand - "Ow" is an abbreviation for Owen .
  • Entry for Hastings - Christian name in Parish registers is spelt Rodiment at burial of a child in 1803 and Rodament when he was buried in 1830.
  • Entry for Mr Scarlett - "Winburgh" could possibly be "Pinburgh"?
