Land Tax: 1800-33

This tax was based on the value of property etc. and paid by the owner or (sometimes) occupier according to their agreement. It started in 1692 and valuations are based on those done at this date.

For more information on these records see the Land Tax Assessments page. This is also where examples of the standard headers from 1798 to 1825 and 1826 to 1832 are linked to.

These Norfolk Record Office documents [with the references C/SCD 2/28/1 1767 to C/SCD 2/28/39 1832] are from the Norfolk Quarter Sessions Land Tax Assessments which are arranged by divisions this one being in Shropham Hundred.

Notes

  • In other documents the following alternative spellings have been seen which appear to refer to the same people/places:-
Colbourn/Colborn/Colborne/Coulbourn/"Ridley Colbourn", Davy/Davey, Mg Gooch/Manning Gooch, Loyd/Lloyd, The Revd Dean Miller/Rev. Combe Miller - Dean of Chichester, Wellingham/Willingham.
  • JPs (Justices of the Peace) who passed these accounts are:-
    "JFF" = "J F Franklin", "MG" = "Manning Gooch", "TBJ" = "Thomas Beevor Junior", "JTB" = "J(ohn) T(horesby) Bird", "TPS" = "T(homas) P(eyton) Slapp", "JW" = "John Wright"
  • Assessors [AS] or Collectors [CO] (1826 form said they must live within parish) :- "JC" = "John Cooke", "JD" = "James Drane", "JF" = "John France", "JG" = "James Gooch", "JW" = "John Wellingham"
  • The entry "J Gates Larling" probably implies that he lives in the Parish of Larling?
  • The Incumbent of Eccles from 30th April 1799 until Aug 1837 was the Reverend George Wilson according to the "List of Norfolk Benefices" by "Dawson Turner" published in 1847. He was succeeded by Reverend Richard Lubbock. The patron of the living was Rev. Combe Miller - Dean of Chichester and Ann his wife, and James Martin Lloyd, Esq., and Rebecca his wife.
  • Rate was at 4s/£1 (of Valuation) for all the above years.
  • The abbreviations are "Edwd" = "Edward", "Hon" = "Honourable", "Richd" = "Richard", "Sr" = "Sir", "Thos" = "Thomas", "Wm" = "William".
  • The Valuation of £45 is incorrect and should be £48/10s. The sum assessed on £48/10s + £31 is £15/18s which is correct.
  • The 1832 "Register of Electors - Western Division" in Shropham Hundred and parish of Eccles shows :-
John Wellingham occupier of land at Overy Farm
James Drane occupier of land near the Church
Edward Wellingham occupier of land "Adjoining Eccles Common"
James Flower Esquire occupier of land with location as Eccles Hall
  • The following are noted from Eccles Parish Registers:-
    • Burials 1813 onwards :-
Entry 1 - Revd. Combe Miller, Dean of Chichester on 26th Feb 1814 aged 68 years.
Entry 25 - Ann relict (widow) of Revd. Combe Miller on 23rd Oct 1826 aged 71 years - Place of Residence = Walsham le Willows (Suffolk). She was one of two daughters and coheiresses of Reverend William Green and Ann (nee Gordon)
