Census: 1821

West Harling is one of the few places in the county for which a census before 1841 containing names survives.

This 1821 Norfolk Record Office document [with the reference PD 27/22 or MF 1798/134-135] is on 1 very wide sheet of paper with more than 30 columns. This has been split into 2 tables for ease of viewing.

Notes

  • All shorthand contractions in the document have been reproduced as written.
  • The letter "P" written after numbers in table 1 indicates no of people as opposed to families which heads the column.
  • There are errors in the second table "Total" line.
    • Male 15-20 should be 8 not 11. This was probably caused by a corrected error in the same column under Mr Pymar from 6 to 3.
    • Male 40-50 should be 6 not 5. This was probably caused by a corrected error in the same column under Warman.
  • In other documents and transcriptions the following alternative spellings have been seen which appear to refer to the same people/places:-
    Harbour/Harber/Harbor, Lefley/Leffley/Leftley, Munford/Mundford, Nottley/Notley, Pymar/Pymer.
  • "Coachmans" may just refer to a building called the "Coachman's House".
  • According to the Land Tax for 1816 to 1822 William PYMAR occupied Stone House Farm, Charles MURTON was at Thorpe house Farm and Mr J. W. NICOLSON at Middle Harling Farm
