Memoirs of Frederick August Ludowig Buchholtz De Salis

This has been found by the Norfolk transcribers for FreeREG, at the end of the Hethersett St Remigius register of baptisms and burials 1782-1812.

It is on a loose leaf of paper, and there is no indication of why it has been inserted into the register, or if there is any connection with Hethersett. It is not dated, but the London Gazette for 8th August 1797 lists "Prisoners in His Majesty's Gaol the Castle of York", including

Frederick August Ludowig Buchholtz De Salis, formerly of Carlton Rode in the County of Norfolk, late of Sheffield in the West Riding of the County of York, Gentleman.

Carleton Rode is about 8 miles from Hethersett.

PROPOSALS
For PUBLISHING by SUBSCRIPTION,
IN THREE VOLUMES OCTAVO,
THE
MEMOIRS
OF
FREDERICK AUGUST LUDOWIG BUCHHOLTZ;
COMMONLY CALLED
DE SALIS,
A PRUSSIAN GENTLEMAN.

Late Counsellor of War to his Majesty Frederick II. King of Prussia; Treasurer General and Privy Secretary to the Noble States of the Electorate of Brandenburgh; Deputy of the said States to all the Finance Establishments guaranteed by the States; for thirteen years a Farmer in England; and Member of the Select Committee of Correspondence of the Agricultural Society at Bath;

Now a Prisoner in the Castle of York.

To THE PUBLIC IN ENGLAND AND IN GERMANY.

The Author's views in this Publication are: 1. To justify his conduct (as well in Germany as in England) from various malicious aspersions which have been thrown upon it with a most liberal hand. 2. To employ his time as much as in his power, to the praise of God, to the instruction and amusement of the Public, and to his own advantage. 3. To get a sum of money that may enable him to pay his lawful and just debts, (which have been chiefly contracted by his various experiments in Agriculture during eight years); perhaps to enable him to settle again in a Farm in England, in order to be sheltered from want, for the remaining part of his life.

The Work is already composed in the German language, and wants only to be translated by the Author into English.

THE VOLUMES WILL CONTAIN AS FOLLOWS:

     VOL. I. The Author's Life from his birth to the age of twenty-five years; in which will be given a Portrait of the Author, and a Ground Plan of Berlin, both of which are already executed.
     VOL. II. The Author's Life from the age of twenty-five to thirty-eight, when he was obliged to fly from his Country; with a Map of the Country, twelve miles in circumference round Berlin.
     VOL. III. The Author's arrival in England in the year 1784; his farming Life in this Country; his misfortunes; and the wonders of Providence chiefly in this latter period; likewise a Ground Plan of Potsdam, with proper explanations and references.

The Work will be dedicated to his Patrons, Friends, and Benefactors in Germany, as well as in England, and their names specified.
The names of the Subscribers will be published with the last volume.
The First Volume will be put to the Press as soon as the Author has received sufficient Subscription-money to defray the expence of engraving and printing.
The Subscription for the First Volume will be 10s. 6d.

SUBSCRIPTIONS are received by J. DEBRETT, C. DILLY, and G. G. and J. ROBINSON, London; and by the Booksellers in York, Leeds, Norwich, &c.
