"HOUGHTON-ON-THE-HILL is a small parish, 4 miles S.E. of Swaffham, containing only 41 souls, and 600 acres of land, mostly belonging to E. T. Applewhaite, Esq., and occupied by non-residents. Mr. Wm. Blomfield, farm steward, occupies the house, besides which the only other dwellings are five cottages. The Church (St. Mary) is small pile, with a tower and 1 bell. The living is a discharged rectory, valued in the King's Book at £4.18s.9d., and consolidated with that of North Pickenham." There may be more people living in detached parts of the parish (if there were any) and, if so, the number may or may not be included in the figures above. It is quite difficult to be sure from the population tables.
