King's Lynn elected 2 people to represent the Borough in Parliament from at least 1298 until 1885 after which only one person was elected. Before the secret ballot of 1872 Poll Books were published for many contested elections indicating how the voters (only Freemen of the Borough until 1832) voted.   • 1. Some variation will be found in the names of the places when compared to their standard spelling which are given in "()".
  • 2. John Daville was minister from 1755 to 1800 at Wiggenhall St. Mary.
  • 3. Page numbers (as printed in the original) start at "[4]".
  • 4. Column headings shows votes for T.=Turner, W.=Walpole or M.= Molineux
  • 5. "Gent."= Gentleman
  • 6. Charles Bagge D.D. was minister from 1755 to 1777 at King's Lynn St Margaret
  • 7. "Stephen Stokeham" had votes for all 3 candidates? In the other poll book he voted for "Walpole" and "Molineux" and not "Turner".
  • 8. The meaning of names in CAPITALS and Bold letters is not currently known?
  • 9. The notation "---" for trades and residences normally means "Ditto" or the same as the previous one.
  • 10. In other documents the following alternative spellings have been seen which appear to refer to the same people/places:-
    Peake/Peek, Stokeham/Stoakham
  • 11. The meaning of "Upholder" is "Tradesman" or more specifically could be one of Auctioneer, Broker, Undertaker or Upholsterer.
