Voting Registers - 1822

(Original Poll Clerks Book)

King's Lynn elected 2 people to represent the Borough in Parliament from at least 1298 until 1885 after which only one person was elected. Before the secret ballot of 1872 Poll Books were published for many contested elections indicating how the voters (only Freemen of the Borough until 1832) voted. See King's Lynn Voting page for all known. This transcription is from the two original poll clerks books which are to be found in the Heritage Section, Millenium Library, Norwich.

There were changes indicated by (*) or (*="actual difference") between this and the printed poll book. Some are minor while others are errors either in this or in the printed word. Bear in mind that the printing was done locally so the printers would have known many of the voters.

Given below are the dates for the other Polls up to 25th July 1837 with links to further transcriptions. For later ones follow the link to the King's Lynn voting page.

[End of Poll Book]

Notes

  • 1. "James Esdaile" had the word "Assesor" in the normally blank column on the far right hand side of the page.
  • 2. "Barnabas Batterbee" had the following in the column on the right hand side of the page - "Would vote for Folkes. Says he has not taken up his Freedom but is entitled to it & is advised to tender his vote his Freedom having been refused(?) by the Corporation. J. Cobb"
  • 3. "Henry Harvey" had a word which looked like "Disputed?" in the last column
  • 4. This looked like "Peck" but "Peek" is believed to be correct.
  • 5. Under Street Address in Book No 2 the poll clerks often miss out the word "Street"/"Lane" etc. King's Lynn has amongst its many addresses the following :-
Austin Street, Boal Street, Chapel Street, Checker (Chequer?) Street, High Street, Littleport Street, Norfolk Street, North End, Pilot Street, St Ann's St, Sedgeford Lane etc.
  • 6. There may still be other people eligible to vote who are not listed here? An analysis of all freemen living at this time would answer this question.
  • 7. In other documents the following alternative spellings have been seen which appear to refer to the same people/places:-
    Foothorape/Foothrape, Fysh/Fish, Peake/Peek
