Norfolk: King's Lynn -

Voting Registers - Poll 1826

King's Lynn elected 2 people to represent the Borough in Parliament from at least 1298 until 1885 after which only one person was elected. Before the secret ballot of 1872 Poll Books were published for many contested elections indicating how the voters (only Freemen of the Borough until 1832) voted. See King's Lynn Voting page for all known.

Most of the places of residence are in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire or Lincolnshire but a number of people are seen to be living elsewhere. The notes section will help to identify the location of some of these.

AT THE CLOSE OF THE POLL, THE NUMBERS WERE

  N.B.   R. C. Arnop, voted for Sir Wm. Folkes, and his vote was recorded by mistake, although as he was neither a Freeman nor entitled to his Freedom, the Majorities, should be stated as under.

The following Freemen arrived on Saturday Evening, who stated before the Mayor their intention to have voted for Sir. Wm. Folkes,

W. Wigmore a Freeman also arrived on Saturday Evening but refused to declare for whom he intended to vote.

Notes

• 1. A "---" or "...." in the "ADDITIONS" or the "RESIDENCE" columns indicates "ditto".
• 2. Name spelling varied and below are some alternatives which are to be found in the other King's Lynn Poll Books which may refer to the same families :- Crisp/Crispe, Fackney/Fakeney/Fachney, Harwick/Hardwick, Hogge/Hogg, Mackee/Makee, Meers/Meyers, Merrycock/Merricock, Reed/Read, Wardle/Wardell.
• 3. Many places outside Norfolk had seafaring connections through trade and shipbuilding. Some of those given as residences are listed below together with the Chapman county codes in "[]" in which they lay in 1826 :- Camberwell [SRY], Chatham [KEN], Deptford [KEN], Greenwich [KEN], Gillingham [KEN], Lambeth [SRY], London [LND], North Blyth [NBL] and Rotherhithe [LND].
• 4. Page numbers and headings "A", "B", ..."Y" were not in the original and have been added here for clarity.
