Voting Registers - Poll 1835

King's Lynn elected 2 people to represent the Borough in Parliament from at least 1298 until 1885 after which only one person was elected. Before the secret ballot of 1872 Poll Books were published for many contested elections indicating how the voters (only Freemen of the Borough until 1832) voted. See King's Lynn Voting page for all known.

The "First Reform Act" of 1832 expanded the potential number of people qualified to vote. A "Register of Electors" was compiled each year of those eligible to vote in case of an election and this would also include the Freemen of the Borough. This Poll is a sub-set of the electorate as some people did not vote.

Many street names have been abbreviated and some full names will be found in the notes.

At the close of the Poll the numbers were declared by the Mayor as follows:

NOTE -- Some slight inaccuracies were subsequently discovered in the Poll Book, kept at the Tuesday Market Booth. Samuel Eggleton, St. Nicholas Street, recorded as having voted for Bentinck and Lillie, voted for Bentinck and Canning --- Joseph Binge, Norfolk Street, recorded for Bentinck and Canning, voted Lillie. The actual numbers were for Bentinck 530 -- Canning 418 -- Lillie 238.

• 1. A "---" or "...." in the "Residence" or the "Qualification" columns indicates "ditto".
• 2. Name spelling varied and below are some alternatives which are to be found in the other King's Lynn Poll Books which may refer to the same families :- Belchambers/Bellchambers, Clithero/Clethero?, Fachney/Fackney, Forrest/Forest, Hogg/Hogge, Nuccoll/Nuccol.
• 3. Page numbers and headings "A", "B", ..."Y" were not in the original and have been added here for clarity.
• 4. The following are some of the streets to be found in King's Lynn at the time of the poll or as stated :-
  Buckingham Terrace (London Road near South Gate), New Conduit Street, North Clough Lane, Providence Row, Saturday Market Place, Sedgeford Lane, Tuesday Market Place and Valingers Road (1885).
