Norfolk: Newton by Castle Acre

NEWTON-BY-CASTLE-ACRE is a small village near the summit of the southern acclivity of the Vale of the Nar, overlooking Castle Acre, 4 miles N. by E. from Swaffham. It is in Swaffham union and county court district, Lynn bankruptcy district, Swaffham polling district of West Norfolk, South Greenhoe hundred and petty sessional division, North Cranwich rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. It had 68 inhabitants in 1881, living on 1058 acres, and has a rateable value of £1526. Algernon Charles Fountaine, Esq., J.P., Edward Wemnart Martin, Esq., and the Earl of Leicester are the principal landowners, the first of whom is lord of the manor.

The CHURCH (All Saints) is supposed to be the oldest church in East Anglia. It was erected in 910, and is a low and heavy pile, the roof of the nave and chancel having been lowered four or five feet. It has a low square tower, rising between the nave and chancel, and is of cruciform structure, but the north and south transepts have disappeared. An elaborate carved pulpit, prayer desk, and lectern have been erected. In the tower is one deep-toned bell of very ancient date. The vicarage, valued in the King's Book at £2 15s., and now at £103, was augmented with £200 of Queen Anne's Bounty in 1810. The Bishop of Norwich is patron of the living, which is at present vacant. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the impropriators of the great tithes.

The poor have 16s. a year left by William Allee in 1865. It is united with Castle Acre for school purposes, and it is proposed to unite it also with that parish for ecclesiastical purposes.
