Probate before 1858

Before 1858 probate was administered by church courts. In Norfolk there were 3 main courts

  • Norwich Consistory Court (NCC)
  • Archdeaconry of Norfolk (ANF)
  • Archdeaconry of Norwich (ANW)

and 3 Peculiar courts

  • Dean and Chapter of Norwich (DCN)
  • Peculiar of Castle Rising
  • Peculiar of Great Cressingham

Remember to look in the records of all of the courts that covered Norfolk (including the Prerogative Court of Canterbury), as people did not always use the court that covered their parish.

See the Norfolk Record Office Guide to Probate Records.

Images of wills from 1800-1858 are online as part of Norfolk Sources.

Some probate was proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC). Please search for more information at the National Archives.

Death Duty Registers

Death duty registers exist for the years 1796-1903.

Please search for more information at the National Archives.
