SIDESTRAND, or Syderstrand, on the coast, 3 miles E.S.E. of Cromer, has its parish in Erpingham union, North Erpingham hundred and petty sessional division, North Walsham county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, Cromer polling district of North Norfolk, Repps rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. It had 158 inhabitants in 1881, living on 404 acres, and has a rateable value of £748. The parish partly belongs to Samuel Hoare, Esq., the lord of the manor, and partly to the Spurrell family.
The Church (St. Michael) was rebuilt on a site 600 yards more inland, near the main road, in 1881, at a cost of £2000, principally defrayed by Samuel Hoare, Esq., who also gave the site and the burial-ground. The tower of the old church is left standing, and the material of the remainder of the building was used in the erection of the new church. The new church comprises nave, chancel, and tower with three bells, the latter being added at a cost of £100 by subscription, and through the exertions of Miss Elmer Hoare.
The rectory, valued in the King's Book at £5.10s., and now having 2A.19P. of glebe, and a yearly rent-charge of £106.12s., awarded in 1838 in lieu of tithes, was augmented with £200 Queen Anne's Bounty in 1810. The Rev. F.G. Simpson, B.A., of Overstrand, is the incumbent, and the patronage is alternately in the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Samuel Hoare, Esq., the former having the next presentation. The poor have 2 acres of land at Trimingham.
