SUSTEAD is a parish, 4½ miles S.S.W. of Cromer, in Erpingham union, North Erpingham hundred and petty sessional division, North Walsham county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, North Walsham polling district of North Norfolk, Repps rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. It had 116 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 483 acres of land. The rateable value is £1045. The soil mostly belongs to the Exors. of the late John Ketton, Esq., and to the Exors. of the late - Wyndham, Esq. Mr. Ketton's Exors. are also lords of the manor, which was formerly held by the Damme family.
The CHURCH (St. Peter and St. Paul), was probably built in the 15th century. It is of beautiful proportions, and has a handsome front on which are carved the arms of the Fellingges, Talbots, Dammes, &c. It has a round tower and one bell. The living is a perpetual curacy, certified at £16, and now valued at £34. It was augmented from 1779 to 1809, with £600 of Queen Ann's Bounty, laid out in land at Great Witchingham. The Exors. of John Ketton, Esq., are patrons, and the Rev. Skeffington Armstrong, B.A., is the incumbent.
This parish was united with Aylmerston [sic] for School Board purposes in 1876. (See page 129 [which is the entry for Aylmerton).
